Horseshoe Falls under a blue sky with a tour boat in the mist

Fifty short answers about Niagara Falls boat tours, checked on October 17, 2026. Each links to a deeper guide, and each states its basis when sources disagree. Prices are 2026 published fares; Canadian prices exclude 13% HST unless stated. For how we check facts, see the methodology.

Choosing a boat tour

Start here if you are deciding between the US and Canadian boats, or between a boat and another way to see the falls. The two operators run separate services on opposite sides of the Niagara River, and they do not sell each other's tickets.

Which is better, Maid of the Mist or Niagara City Cruises?

Visitor accounts we reviewed describe the two rides as close to identical, so most people choose by the side of the river they are on. The real differences are price, boat design, the border crossing and night cruises, which only the Canadian operator offers. See our side-by-side comparison.

Should I take the boat from the Canada side or the US side?

Pick the side you are already on. Maid of the Mist boards in Niagara Falls State Park, New York, and needs no passport to board. Niagara City Cruises boards at the Lower Landing in the gorge in Ontario. Crossing the border adds time and document checks. See Canada versus USA.

Is the Niagara Falls boat tour worth it?

Most sources say yes for a first visit: a 20-minute ride takes you to the base of the Horseshoe Falls. The drawbacks are getting wet, summer queues and cost (US$30.25 adult at Maid of the Mist, from CA$47.95 before tax at Niagara City Cruises). Our worth-it page lists who should skip it.

Does the boat go behind the falls?

No. The boats go to the base of the falls, not behind them. Walking behind the Horseshoe Falls is a separate Niagara Parks attraction, Journey Behind the Falls, about 60 minutes, listed at CA$33.00 for adults on the attraction page. See the Journey Behind the Falls guide.

Is there still a Maid of the Mist on the Canadian side?

No. Maid of the Mist's last Canadian-side day was in late October 2013, and Hornblower began carrying the public in May 2014. Hornblower's operation is now called Niagara City Cruises. Maid of the Mist runs only from the US side. See the name change explained.

What is the difference between the boat, Journey Behind the Falls and Cave of the Winds?

They are three different attractions. The boat is a 20-minute ride on the river. Journey Behind the Falls is a Niagara Parks tunnel and deck walk of about 60 minutes. Cave of the Winds is a separate attraction on the US side. No Niagara Falls Pass tier includes a boat. See things to do near the falls.

Do jet boat tours go to the falls?

No. Jet boat tours run the lower Niagara River gorge and the Whirlpool rapids downstream of the falls. Only the Maid of the Mist and Niagara City Cruises boats go to the base of the falls. If you want rapids and speed, read our jet boat guide, and treat the two as different experiences.

Season and timing

Season dates move with Lake Erie ice, and both operators say schedules can change without notice. These answers use the 2026 schedules as published on October 17, 2026, when Maid of the Mist was three weeks from closing for the year.

When does the boat season open and close in 2026?

Maid of the Mist's 2026 season runs from April 24 to November 8. Niagara City Cruises opened on May 1, 2026 after Lake Erie ice delayed its start, and it has published no closing date. It says December sailings depend on weather. Checked October 17, 2026. See the best time to go.

Can I ride a Niagara Falls boat in October?

Yes, for now. Maid of the Mist runs daily from 9 am to 5 pm from September 28 to October 31, then 9 am to 4 pm from November 1 to 8. Niagara City Cruises has not published October hours or a closing date, so check its booking page. See boat tours in October.

What are the 2027 boat season dates?

Neither operator had published 2027 dates when we checked on October 17, 2026. Maid of the Mist's spring opening depends on Lake Erie ice, and ice delayed Niagara City Cruises in 2026. We add 2027 dates to the changelog when an operator publishes them.

What is the best time of day to ride?

A reseller guide says before about 10 am or after 6 pm is quieter. Operators publish no quietest hour, though Maid of the Mist's site has a wait-time trends feature. In October Maid of the Mist closes at 5 pm, so only the morning option applies there. See boat tour wait times.

Can I take a boat tour in winter or early spring?

Generally no. Maid of the Mist is closed from November 9 until opening day 2027 and its schedule page also lists it closed January 1 to April 23. Niagara City Cruises says December sailings depend on weather and has no winter schedule. See Niagara Falls in winter for alternatives.

Are there night or fireworks boat cruises?

Only on the Canadian side. The Niagara City Cruises Falls Fireworks Cruise is about 40 minutes, runs on select evenings spring to fall, and starts at CA$47.95 for adults. Niagara Parks fireworks ran nightly from May 15 to October 12, 2026 at 10 pm, and the 2027 schedule is unpublished. Maid of the Mist's latest 2026 closing is 8 pm. See night and fireworks cruises.

How long is the Niagara Falls boat ride?

About 20 minutes on both Maid of the Mist and Niagara City Cruises' Voyage to the Falls, per the operators. Queuing and boarding add time: a reseller guide estimates 40 to 90 minutes in total. The fireworks cruise is about 40 minutes. See how long the boat ride takes.

How long are the lines?

Operators publish no wait times, apart from Maid of the Mist's wait-time trends tool. Niagara City Cruises says mid-June to Labour Day and holiday weekends from 11 am to 6 pm are peak, and a departure within your slot is not guaranteed. Visitor accounts range from 15 to more than 60 minutes. See wait times.

Tickets and prices

Prices below are 2026 published fares. Maid of the Mist prices are in US dollars and include the elevator. Niagara City Cruises and Niagara Parks prices are in Canadian dollars before 13% HST. Where two sources disagree, we show both.

How much does Maid of the Mist cost in 2026?

The 2026 published fare is US$30.25 for adults and US$19.75 for children aged 6 to 12, with children aged 5 and under free. The price includes the elevator to the landing. No senior or family prices are listed. Checked October 17, 2026. See boat tour prices.

How much does Niagara City Cruises cost in 2026?

Voyage to the Falls starts at CA$47.95 for adults, before 13% HST. For children aged 3 to 12, Niagara Parks lists CA$32.95 and Niagara Falls Tourism lists CA$27.95, so the sources conflict. The operator's own page shows only "starting at". Checked October 17, 2026. See tickets.

Do I need to book the boat tour in advance?

Maid of the Mist takes no date or time reservations, and boarding is first come, first served. Niagara City Cruises sells timed tickets online and at its ticket plaza, subject to availability. Booking ahead is a sensible precaution on weekends and holidays, though we found no sold-out reports for 2025. See how to buy tickets.

Does an online Maid of the Mist ticket guarantee a boarding time?

No. An online ticket is an emailed voucher, valid any day of the 2026 season, that you exchange for a boarding ticket at the booth. Boarding is first come, first served for everyone, including online buyers. The 2026 season ends November 8, so use any voucher before then.

Where should I buy tickets to avoid overpaying?

Buy from the operator's own website or ticket plaza. Maid of the Mist says it does not endorse third-party resellers and accepts only official tickets. Reviewers on one Trustpilot page report resellers charging far above window prices, which is anecdotal. Check the seller's name and refund terms. See buying tickets safely.

What is the refund and cancellation policy?

Niagara City Cruises payments are non-refundable unless you bought Ticket Assurance. Rescheduling needs 48 hours' notice, and inside 48 hours tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable. Ticket Assurance allows changes up to 2 hours before departure. We found no refund or rain-check text for Maid of the Mist. See the refund policy page.

Are there student, senior or group discounts?

Niagara City Cruises says it offers no student or senior discounts and no gift cards; groups of 20 or more contact the operator. Maid of the Mist lists no senior or family prices, though its State Park page lists a group adult rate of US$27.25. See passes and discounts.

Does the Niagara Falls Pass include a boat tour?

No tier includes one. The 2026 Niagara Falls Pass, which replaced the Adventure Pass name, costs CA$89 Classic, CA$109 Plus and CA$129 Premium for adults, and is valid April 20 to November 1, 2026. See what each pass includes. Passes are sold by Niagara Parks, not by the boat operators.

Are ponchos provided, and what colour are they?

Both operators provide a free poncho. Maid of the Mist's is a hooded rain poncho, and Niagara City Cruises' is a recyclable mist poncho. Neither operator states the colour on the pages we read, so we do not publish one. Visitors report that ponchos reduce but do not stop soaking. See how wet you get.

On the boat

The operators publish little about on-board rules, so some answers say what we could not find. We have not ridden the boats, and we describe visitor experience only as reports from other travellers.

How wet will I get on the Niagara Falls boat tour?

Likely wet. Maid of the Mist's FAQ says you may still get wet in the poncho, and that the lower back of the boat tends to stay driest. Visitor accounts say feet and legs get the most spray, and the lower deck and front get more. See do you get wet?.

What should I wear on the boat?

Quick-drying layers, closed shoes with grip and a waterproof phone pouch. Niagara City Cruises advises waterproof or quick-drying shoes and a waterproof phone case. October daytime highs average about 15 C (ECCC 1981-2010 normals), so bring a warm layer. See what to wear.

Which deck or side of the boat is best?

We found no reliable left-or-right rule and do not publish one. Visitor accounts say the upper deck gives a panorama and the lower deck is more immersive and wetter. Maid of the Mist says the lower back stays driest. Board early to choose a spot. See the wetness guide.

What is the route, and how close does the boat get?

Maid of the Mist goes past the base of the American Falls and into the basin of the Horseshoe Falls. Niagara City Cruises goes through the gorge past the American and Bridal Veil Falls, then to the Horseshoe Falls. Before sunset its boats enter the heart of the Horseshoe Falls. See the boat tours guide.

Do the boats go into the mist at night?

Not on the Canadian side. Niagara City Cruises says that after sunset its boats go only to the outer edge of the Horseshoe Falls, with light mist, "due to regulations". Before sunset they enter the heart of the falls. Maid of the Mist sails in daylight hours only. See night cruises.

Are there toilets or food on the boat?

Check before you go. Maid of the Mist's FAQ says there is no enclosed area on board and does not mention toilets. Niagara City Cruises does not permit outside food and drink, and current pages do not confirm washrooms aboard, although older operator wording mentioned them. Use facilities before boarding.

Are the boats electric?

Maid of the Mist's two boats, James V. Glynn and Nikola Tesla, are all-electric and carry up to 600 passengers each. They are not called "Maid of the Mist VII and VIII". The sources we read do not state the Niagara City Cruises boats' propulsion, so we make no claim. See the electric boats guide.

What bags, umbrellas and tripods are allowed?

Niagara City Cruises' ticket page allows one personal item up to 17.8 by 38.1 by 40.6 cm (7 by 15 by 16 in), but its Know Before You Go page says small backpacks up to 16 by 20 in are generally permitted. The pages conflict, so bring little. Suitcases and coolers are prohibited. We found no bag, umbrella or tripod rules for Maid of the Mist.

Can I take photos on the boat?

Cameras are allowed on Niagara City Cruises, but professional photo and video gear needs authorization from its marketing team. We found no camera rules for Maid of the Mist. Visitors suggest a waterproof pouch and a wrist strap, and no tripod. See the photography guide.

Access, children and safety

Both operators describe their boats as accessible, but neither publishes every detail. Call ahead for mobility, sensory or health questions, and use the operator's own accessibility page as the final word.

Are the boats wheelchair accessible?

Both operators say yes. Maid of the Mist says its facilities and boats are fully ADA accessible and wheelchairs are allowed on board, with an elevator to the landing included in the ticket. Niagara City Cruises describes ramps and elevators under AODA. Neither publishes a cap on wheelchairs per sailing, so call ahead. See boat tour accessibility.

Can I take a stroller on the boat?

Maid of the Mist recommends leaving strollers in its stroller parking and collecting them after the tour. Niagara City Cruises permits small to mid-size infant strollers and provides designated unsupervised stroller parking before boarding. See Niagara Falls with kids. Confirm the stroller rules with the operator on the day, as sizes can change.

What age is free, and is there a minimum age?

Maid of the Mist has no age restrictions, and children aged 5 and under ride free. Niagara City Cruises' child fare covers ages 3 to 12. Niagara Parks prices ages 2 and under free, but the operator says every rider, including infants, needs a ticket, so confirm with the operator. See family tips.

Are service animals and pets allowed?

Both operators welcome trained service animals. Maid of the Mist welcomes trained service dogs under the ADA, reviews emotional support animals case by case on arrival, and does not permit pets. Niagara City Cruises welcomes guide dogs and service animals and prohibits all other animals. See accessibility details.

Is the boat tour safe?

Both operators describe themselves as regulated. Niagara City Cruises says its vessels are Transport Canada certified and inspected annually, which is an operator claim. Maid of the Mist says it follows US Coast Guard rules, and news reports mention a 2019 Certificate of Inspection. We found no incident records and publish no safety statistics. See boat tour safety.

Do the boats run in rain, wind or fog?

Maid of the Mist says its boats operate rain or shine. Niagara City Cruises says cruises run only when conditions are considered safe. Neither page we read gives refund wording for weather cancellations, so call the operator that morning. See cancellation and refunds.

Is the boat scary for toddlers?

Visitor accounts are mixed: one parent reported a terrified child and another a delighted one. Noise, spray, crowds and a wet deck are the usual issues. A spot at the railing helps small children see, according to one family blog. Hold a young child firmly. See the family guide.

Getting there, parking and the border

Border rules, tolls and parking change, so confirm the current figures before you leave. Drive times are free-flow estimates from the OSRM routing engine and do not include traffic or the border wait.

Do I need a passport to ride Maid of the Mist?

Not to board. Maid of the Mist says no passport or ID is needed to ride, because the boat stays in the US park. But if you start in Canada you must cross the border to reach the US side, and you need documents for that crossing. See the border and passport guide.

Can I walk across the Rainbow Bridge?

Pedestrians are permitted on the Rainbow Bridge. The pedestrian toll is US$1.00 or CA$1.25, collected one way, going into the US. CBP lists the bridge as open 24 hours, but on the evening of October 17, 2026 its feed showed pedestrian lanes closed, so confirm before walking.

How much is the Rainbow Bridge car toll?

Cars pay US$6.00 or CA$8.50, collected one way, when entering Canada, and nothing coming back into the US. The Peace Bridge also tolls Canada-bound only: US$4.00 with E-ZPass, or US$8.00 or CA$11.00 by card. See getting to Niagara Falls. Confirm current tolls before you travel, because bridge commissions change them.

Where do I park for Maid of the Mist?

Niagara Falls State Park Lot 1, 333 Prospect St, is closest. From October 12, 2026 to March 31, 2027 the fee is $10 a day. From May 22 to October 11 it was $10 Monday to Thursday and $15 Friday to Sunday. Lots fill early on weekends. See boat tour parking.

Where do I park for Niagara City Cruises?

The operator has no lot of its own. Its directions list the SkyWheel lot (4960 Clifton Hill) and the Fallsview lot (6650 Niagara Parkway), at a flat daily fee we could not find. Niagara Parks' Rainbow Bridge lot, 4348 Hiram St, is $12 an hour and about a 10-minute walk. See parking options.

How far is Niagara Falls from Toronto?

About 131 km. An OSRM free-flow estimate is 1 h 41 min with no traffic or border, so allow 2 to 2.5 hours on summer Fridays and Sundays. GO Transit trains run from Toronto Union, with weekend service year-round. See how to get there or the Toronto day tour.

How far is Niagara Falls from the Buffalo airport?

About 40 km (25 mi) and 41 minutes by free-flow estimate to the Canadian side, plus the border crossing. Options from the airport include rideshare, taxi, shuttle, FlixBus and NFTA Metro. Amtrak's Niagara Falls NY station is under 5 miles from the State Park. See getting to Niagara Falls.

Where do I board, and does the Falls Incline Railway go to the dock?

Maid of the Mist boards at the Observation Tower in the State Park, with an elevator included. Niagara City Cruises boards at the Lower Landing via the ticket plaza at 5920 Niagara Parkway. The Falls Incline Railway links Fallsview and Table Rock and does not go to the dock. See the boat tours guide.
