Journey Behind the Falls: guide and comparison with the boat

A walk through old tunnels to portals behind the Horseshoe Falls, and how to fit it around a boat ride.

Horseshoe Falls with icicles and snow in winter
Short answerJourney Behind the Falls is a self-guided walk about 125 feet down through old bedrock tunnels to portals and decks beside the Horseshoe Falls. Allow about an hour. Niagara Parks lists C$33 per adult and C$21.50 per child 3 to 12 before tax. It is a different view from the boat, not a replacement for it.

Journey Behind the Falls is the attraction people mean when they ask whether you can go "behind" Niagara Falls. The boat cannot. The ride goes to the base of the American Falls and into the basin of the Horseshoe Falls, from the front. If you want the view from the other side of the curtain of water, this is the one. This page covers what it is, tickets, accessibility, the redevelopment plans, and how to fit it around a boat ride. For the wider menu, see things to do near Niagara Falls.

What Journey Behind the Falls is

According to Niagara Parks, you descend 125 feet into the bedrock and walk through tunnels the operator describes as about 130 years old, to viewing portals that open behind the falling water and to observation decks at the foot of the Horseshoe Falls. The tunnels are about 8 feet wide and 7 feet tall. A lower observation deck is, in the operator's words, "just feet away" from the falls. The attraction is on the first floor of Table Rock Centre, the welcome centre at the brink of the Horseshoe Falls, and the operator dates the first staircase into the gorge for this kind of visit to 1832.

The visit is self-guided and the page says it takes about 60 minutes, varying by visit. The operator also says you may get "a little bit wet". It does not mention ponchos, so do not assume any are provided; ask at the ticket desk. The queue area has exhibits on how the falls formed, the first Indigenous inhabitants and the rise of Niagara Falls as a tourism destination.

Tickets, prices and the $33 vs $28 question

The attraction page lists C$33 for adults (13+), C$21.50 for children (3 to 12) and free for 2 and under, before 13% HST. The Niagara Falls Pass presale page lists C$28 and C$18.50 for the same attraction. Niagara Parks does not explain the difference. It may be a presale discount, or one page may be out of date. On a family of two adults and two children the gap is C$109 versus C$93, a difference of C$16 before tax. If the saving matters to you, check the price at the moment you buy, and be aware that presale pages tied to the Falls Pass can expire when the pass does (the 2026 pass is valid to November 1).

The pass for 2026 costs C$89 (Classic), C$109 (Plus) or C$129 (Premium) and runs April 20 to November 1, so read the dates before you rely on it in autumn. Our trip cost calculator adds Journey to a boat ticket and shows the HST.

Hours and when to go

The page says Journey is open daily for general admission, but the daily hours table did not load for us (it showed unfilled template text), so we cannot state opening or closing times. The operator recommends arriving at least one hour before closing. Treat any time you see on a third-party site as "check hours". The attraction is year-round, which makes it one of the few Canadian-side things that stays available after the boats stop. See Niagara Falls in winter.

For crowds, we have no published queue data for Journey, so we will not say which hour is quiet. The sensible rule is the one that applies to the whole Table Rock area: the first part of the day and the evening tend to be easier than midday in July and August, but that is a general pattern, not a measured one for this attraction.

Journey at Night

Niagara Parks offers Journey at Night during the nightly illumination. The page says you can watch the falls glow with colour from the observation deck, and that in fireworks season the fireworks appear above the falls at 10:00 pm. It advises arriving 15 minutes before your timeslot. Illumination times in 2026 depend on the date: lights come on at 18:00 from Oct 16 to 31 and at 16:30 from Nov 1 to Dec 31. The 2026 fireworks season ended on October 12 and the 2027 schedule is not yet published, so no fireworks are expected in the cold months. We do not have the ticket price or dates for Journey at Night; the page links to nothing separate that we could read, so confirm whether a regular ticket covers an evening visit before you buy.

Accessibility

Niagara Parks lists Journey as partially accessible. Specifically:

  • An elevator leads to a wide, well-lit accessible tunnel, the viewing portals and the upper observation deck.
  • The lower observation deck, the one closest to the water, is reached by stairs.
  • Strollers are not permitted inside. The FAQ says so directly, so plan for a carrier or a place to leave the stroller at Table Rock Centre (ask staff).
  • Bags larger than 56 x 36 x 23 cm (22 x 14 x 9 in) are not allowed, and all other bags are subject to inspection.

The Niagara Parks accessibility line is 1-877-642-7275 (weekdays 9:00 to 4:30), with TTY 1-855-356-5672. Wheelchairs are loaned at Table Rock Centre on a first-come basis according to the Table Rock Centre page. For the boats, see boat tour accessibility.

The redevelopment, and the date discrepancy

Niagara Parks has announced a $25 million project funded from its earned revenue. There are two phases:

PhaseAttraction page saysRedevelopment page saysWhat changes
OneSpring 2027Summer 2027Reopens the original tunnel built in 1903 (closed during the Second World War), keeps the carved rock walls and wood beams, and adds a year-round viewing platform (the attraction page says covered and heated)
TwoSpring 2028Summer 2028Redevelops the lower observation deck, called the Rainbow Platform, for year-round use, better accessibility and a closer view

Two pages from the same operator disagree on the season (spring versus summer). We do not know which is right, so we say "2027" and "2028" and leave the month to Niagara Parks. The attraction page says Journey will remain open during the improvements; the redevelopment page does not address it either way. If you are visiting in 2027 or 2028, check the Niagara Parks page for any closed sections before you buy. We do not state any 2027 price because none is published.

Journey Behind the Falls compared with the boat

If you can only do one, the boat gives the sense of being in the spray, and Journey works when it is cold or the boats are closed. That is a judgement, not a measured preference: is the boat tour worth it sets out the case, and the boat tour chooser helps decide between the operators.

How to combine it with a boat

The most direct pairing is the Canadian boat (Niagara City Cruises) and Journey on the same morning. The cruise plaza is at 5920 Niagara Parkway and Journey is in Table Rock Centre; we have no sourced walking time between them, so allow extra. A workable order is to ride the boat first, when you are already dressed for spray, then go to Journey while your clothes dry, since Journey is described as only a little wet. If you are doing the US boat, Journey requires crossing the border, so it is a separate half day. Pair it on the Canadian side with the one-day and two-day plans.

  • If it is a wet-weather day, do Journey at midday and the boat only if the boat is running. Both are exposed to spray.
  • If you have a stroller, leave it outside; plan for a baby carrier.
  • If anyone cannot do stairs, they can use the elevator to the tunnel, portals and upper deck, but not the lower deck.
  • If you want an evening visit, check whether your ticket includes Journey at Night and the hours for that date.
  • If you have the Falls Pass, Journey is included; the pass does not cover a boat.

What the sources do not say

  • The daily opening and closing times and the last entry time for Journey.
  • The price of Journey at Night, and the poncho policy.
  • Why the presale page and the attraction page show different prices.
  • Whether the redevelopment opens in spring or summer 2027 and 2028.
  • The street address: the page lists both 6650 and 6635 Niagara Parkway. The closest lot is Falls Parking (Lot A), 6635 Niagara Parkway, at a variable rate.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Niagara Falls boat tour go behind the falls?

No. The boats go to the base of the American Falls and into the basin of the Horseshoe Falls, but they stay in front of the water. Journey Behind the Falls is the separate Niagara Parks attraction that takes you through tunnels to portals behind the Horseshoe Falls.

How much does Journey Behind the Falls cost in 2026?

The attraction page lists C$33 for adults 13 and over and C$21.50 for children 3 to 12, free for 2 and under, before 13% HST. The Niagara Falls Pass presale page lists C$28 and C$18.50. Niagara Parks does not explain the gap, so check the price when you buy.

How long does Journey Behind the Falls take?

Niagara Parks says about 60 minutes, self-guided, and that it varies by visit. It recommends arriving at least an hour before closing. The daily hours did not load on the page we read, so check the hours page for your date before you plan a tight schedule.

Is Journey Behind the Falls wheelchair accessible?

It is listed as partially accessible. An elevator serves the accessible tunnel, the viewing portals and the upper observation deck. The lower observation deck is reached only by stairs. Strollers are not permitted inside. Call the Niagara Parks accessibility line for specifics before you travel.

Is Journey Behind the Falls open in winter?

Niagara Parks lists it as year-round. That makes it one of the options after the boat season ends. Daily hours were not readable, so check the hours for your date. A redevelopment is planned for 2027 and 2028, and the page says the attraction stays open during the work.

What is Journey at Night?

It is a way to see the nightly falls illumination from the observation deck. The page says the fireworks appear at 10:00 pm in fireworks season; the 2026 fireworks ended October 12. It advises arriving 15 minutes before your timeslot. Price and dates are not published on the page we read.

Are timed or anytime tickets better?

Timed tickets reserve a one-hour window to join the queue, which helps on busy days. Anytime tickets are flexible, which suits weather-dependent plans. Both are sold online. You can also buy in person at the attraction or at a Niagara Parks welcome centre.

Can I bring a bag or stroller?

Strollers are not permitted. Bags larger than 56 x 36 x 23 cm (22 x 14 x 9 in) are not allowed, and other bags are subject to inspection. Bring as little as you can, and leave bulky items in the car or ask at Table Rock Centre where to leave them.

Is Journey Behind the Falls better than the boat?

They are different. The boat is about 20 minutes on the water and likely to soak you. Journey is about an hour, partly indoors, and described as only a little wet. Some visitors do both if they have time. If you can do only one, the choice depends on weather and who is coming.
