Niagara Falls Boat Tour Cancellation and Refund Policy

The exact refund, reschedule and weather text each operator publishes, and the gaps you should ask about.

Short answerNiagara City Cruises tickets are non-refundable unless you buy Ticket Assurance, with rescheduling free only with 48 hours' notice. Maid of the Mist runs rain or shine, uses a season-long voucher, and we found no published refund or rain-check text. The day tour's terms are confirmed at booking through the contact form.

Cancellation rules are the part of a boat ticket that people read last and regret first. This page collects exactly what each operator publishes, says plainly what we could not find, and gives you the questions to ask. It is a summary of published text, not legal advice, and an operator's checkout terms at the time you pay are the authority. For fares, see boat tour prices; for purchase mechanics, see how to buy tickets.

Niagara City Cruises: what the operator publishes

The Canadian operator's FAQ states the following.

  • Payments are generally non-refundable unless Ticket Assurance was purchased.
  • You can reschedule for the amount paid with 48 hours' notice.
  • Within 48 hours of departure, tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable.
  • No-shows and late arrivals are not compensated.
  • Ticket Assurance lets you reschedule or cancel up to 2 hours before departure, less its own non-refundable cost.
  • Ticket Assurance is not available on holiday, specialty or partnership cruises.

Read together, the rules mean three different zones. More than 48 hours out, you can reschedule, but a refund is not offered. Between 48 hours and 2 hours out, you are inside the non-refundable zone unless you bought Ticket Assurance. Within 2 hours of departure, nothing is changeable. The operator does not say that the reschedule right covers a refund to your card, only that you can rebook for the amount paid.

Late arrivals and the fireworks cruise

The Falls Fireworks Cruise page says the Lower Landing gates close 20 minutes before departure, and late arrivals are not admitted and are not refunded. It also says the operator is not affiliated with the fireworks, cannot guarantee the show, its timing or its length, and is not liable if the show is cancelled. The Niagara Parks fireworks ran nightly at 10 pm through October 12, 2026, weather permitting, so the 2026 fireworks season has ended. The 2027 schedule is unpublished.

The operator's regular Voyage page makes no equivalent gate statement, and no recommended check-in time was published. Because the operator warns of lineups at the Lower Landing in peak season, arrive early. See wait times and the night and fireworks cruise guide.

Worked examples of the 48-hour rule

These examples apply the published wording to common situations. They show how the text reads; the operator decides in practice, so confirm at checkout.

  • You hold a 10:00 am slot on Saturday and want to move it on Wednesday. That is more than 48 hours ahead, so the FAQ's reschedule-for-the-amount-paid rule applies. A refund is not mentioned.
  • You hold the same slot and decide on Friday at 11:00 am, which is 23 hours ahead. You are inside 48 hours. Without Ticket Assurance the ticket is non-refundable and non-transferable.
  • You bought Ticket Assurance and decide at 8:30 am for a 10:00 am slot. That is 1.5 hours ahead, inside the 2-hour limit, so Assurance no longer applies. The cut-off was 8:00 am.
  • You bought a ticket for a holiday or specialty cruise. Ticket Assurance is not offered on those, so the 48-hour rule is your only protection.
  • Your party is delayed by a border queue and arrives after the sailing. The FAQ says late arrivals are not compensated.

The border example matters for visitors from the US. The Rainbow Bridge crossing time is outside either operator's control, and neither publishes a grace period. Build a buffer into the day, or take the Ticket Assurance option if the date matters. Our border and passport guide covers the crossing.

Buying late in the season

As of October 17, 2026, Maid of the Mist has 22 days left in its season (it closes November 8). A voucher is valid any day of the 2026 season, but the pages we read do not say what happens to it afterwards. The Canadian operator has published no closing date, says December sailings depend on weather, and has published no 2027 dates. If you are buying a ticket for a date near the end of the season, ask in writing what happens if sailings stop before your date.

Maid of the Mist: what the operator publishes

The pages we read describe a voucher model, not a refund policy.

  • Boats run rain or shine, and there is no enclosed area.
  • Online tickets are emailed vouchers valid any day of the 2026 season, exchanged for a boarding ticket at the booth.
  • There are no date or time reservations, and boarding is first come, first served.
  • In-person tickets are valid only on the day of purchase.
  • Rates and schedules are subject to change without notice.

What we did not find: no refund wording, no rain-check wording, no statement about weather or river-condition cancellations, and no statement about whether an unused voucher survives past the end of the 2026 season on November 8. Absence of text is not the same as a policy of "no refunds". It means the pages we read did not say. Because the voucher is valid any day of the season, the practical flexibility is in picking another day, not in a refund; but we cannot confirm that no refund is available.

Visitor accounts add colour but not policy. A reviewer on one third-party seller's Trustpilot page says a same-day trip was cancelled for high water and rebooking was pushed back; that is a single anecdote about a reseller, not evidence of how often sailings are cancelled, and it does not show what either operator refunds. We found no fog statistics and make no claim about cancellation frequency.

If you booked through a third party

A reseller sells you its own contract. The operator's terms may not apply, and the reseller's terms often differ. Maid of the Mist says only official tickets and vouchers are accepted, and one reviewer of a reseller says the boat company could not find their booking; treat that as a warning, not a finding. Before you pay, ask the seller:

  • Is this the operator's own ticket or a bundle? Who is the operator of record?
  • What happens if the sailing is cancelled for weather? Who refunds me, and how fast?
  • What happens if I cannot go? Is there a cut-off, and is the Canadian 48-hour rule or Ticket Assurance available?
  • Is the price in US or Canadian dollars, and does it include HST?
  • Do you give me the operator's confirmation number?

Pay by credit card, keep every email, and screenshot the terms page on the day. If the seller cannot answer in writing, buy from the operator. Our guide to tickets and verifying a seller covers this.

The Toronto day tour

This site also promotes our Toronto day tour, so weigh this accordingly. It is one shared tour, daily all year, with the boat as an optional paid add-on. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before the tour.

Ask before booking. Use the form on the booking page or the contact page. Free cancellation applies up to 24 hours before the tour. Ask in writing about anything else: what happens if the tour is cancelled for weather or low numbers (group size is 10 to 30), and how the cruise add-on is covered compared with the cruise operator's own 48-hour rule. Also confirm that the boat add-on is running for your date. See the day tours overview for what the tour includes.

What to ask before you buy

  • What is the cut-off time for changes, and does it count from my slot or from the departure?
  • If the operator cancels for weather or water, do I get a refund, a new date or a credit?
  • If I arrive late, can I board a later sailing?
  • Does Ticket Assurance apply to my cruise type?
  • If I am travelling late in the season, what happens to my ticket if sailings stop?

What the sources do not say

  • Any refund or rain-check text for Maid of the Mist.
  • What either operator does when it cancels a sailing for weather, ice or high water.
  • The price of Ticket Assurance and whether it covers weather cancellations.
  • What happens to unused Canadian or American tickets if the season ends early.
  • Weather and minimum-numbers rules for the Toronto day tour, which we confirm in our reply (free cancellation applies up to 24 hours before the tour).

Frequently asked questions

What is the Niagara City Cruises cancellation policy?

Per its FAQ, payments are non-refundable unless you bought Ticket Assurance. Rescheduling for the amount paid needs 48 hours' notice. Within 48 hours, tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable, and no-shows and late arrivals are not compensated. Always check the current wording at checkout.

What is Ticket Assurance and what does it cover?

Ticket Assurance is an optional add-on that lets you reschedule or cancel up to 2 hours before departure, less its own non-refundable cost. It is not offered on holiday, specialty or partnership cruises. The pages we read do not say what it costs, so check the price at checkout.

Does Maid of the Mist have a refund policy?

We could not find a published refund or rain-check policy on the pages we read, including the FAQ and the schedule and pricing page. The operator says boats run rain or shine, and online vouchers are valid any day of the 2026 season. Ask the operator before you buy if you need terms in writing.

Do the boats run in the rain?

Maid of the Mist says its boats run rain or shine and that there is no enclosed area. Niagara City Cruises says cruises operate only when conditions are considered safe. Neither page we read explains what happens to your ticket if a sailing is cancelled for weather.

What happens if I arrive late for the fireworks cruise?

The operator says the Lower Landing gates close 20 minutes before departure, and late arrivals are not admitted and are not refunded. Treat that as a hard deadline. Plan to be at the plaza well before the gate time, not at the sailing time.

What if I booked through a third party?

The reseller's terms apply, not necessarily the operator's. The Canadian operator's 48-hour rule and Ticket Assurance are described in its own FAQ, and a reseller may not offer either. Read the cancellation terms before you pay, keep your confirmation, and pay by credit card so you have recourse.

What is the cancellation policy for the Toronto day tour?

Our Toronto day tour can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before the tour. If you added the Niagara City Cruises boat ride, ask in your request how it is covered, because the cruise operator's own ticket rules differ (its 48-hour rule). Weather terms are confirmed in our reply.

Can I get a refund if the boats close early for the season?

The pages we read do not say. Maid of the Mist closes for 2026 on November 8, and the Canadian operator has published no closing date, only that December sailings depend on weather. If you are buying close to the end of the season, ask what happens if sailings stop.
