Getting to Niagara Falls: drive times, trains, buses and WEGO

Distances, GO Transit, Amtrak, buses, Buffalo airport and local transport, with what we could not verify.

Toronto skyline and CN Tower across Lake Ontario at sunset
Short answerYou can drive, take the GO train from Toronto (weekend service is confirmed), or use the Amtrak Maple Leaf. Toronto is about 131 km (81 mi) from the Horseshoe Falls, Buffalo airport about 40 km (25 mi). Once there, the WEGO bus links the main Canadian-side stops. Rules, times and fares change, so confirm with the carriers below.

Drive times are computed estimates; transit details are checked against operator pages where we could load them, on October 17, 2026.

This page helps you reach the Niagara Falls boat tours. Niagara City Cruises boards on the Canadian side, and Maid of the Mist boards on the American side, so the route you pick depends on which boat you want. For documents and tolls when you cross, read the border and passport guide. For where to leave a car, read the parking guide. For choosing a side, see Niagara Falls Canada vs USA.

Driving times to Niagara Falls

These figures are our own computed estimates from the OSRM open routing engine on OpenStreetMap data. They are free-flow driving times to the Horseshoe Falls area (43.080 N, 79.074 W) in Canada, with no traffic and no border wait. For US origins, the route enters Canada over a bridge. Google or a motoring club will give different numbers.

The Toronto and Pearson numbers look high. The tool reports 1 h 41 m and 1 h 42 m, while a typical off-peak QEW trip is often faster. That faster figure is a common local experience, not a sourced number. On summer Fridays and Sundays, allow about 2 to 2.5 hours (our own rough planning rule, not a measured or sourced figure). Add time at the border for US origins. Always check live traffic before leaving.

The toll on Rainbow Bridge is collected entering Canada: US$6.00 or CAD $8.50 for a car. The Peace Bridge toll is also Canada-bound only. Details are on the border guide.

GO Transit from Toronto

Niagara Falls GO Station is served by Lakeshore West trains from Toronto Union (via St. Catharines and, since Oct 27, 2025, Confederation GO in Hamilton). Weekend service is year-round, with about 2 h 20 m to 2 h 25 m on the train per a search excerpt; weekday service also runs (reported as three trips each way, not confirmed on an official page we could load). Backup: Lakeshore West to Burlington, then GO Bus 12 to Niagara Falls. We could not load the official timetable PDF, so check the GO trip planner for exact times.

  • Route: Niagara Falls GO Station is served by Lakeshore West trains from Toronto Union, via St. Catharines and, since October 27, 2025, Confederation GO in Hamilton.
  • Weekends: weekend service runs year-round. Metrolinx reported eight trips a day on Saturdays and Sundays since November 2025 (four each way). One search excerpt gave a last westbound train from Union at 5:03 pm arriving at 7:23 pm, and another gave a 9:04 am departure arriving 11:30 am. Treat these as samples, not a timetable.
  • Weekdays: service also runs, reported as three trips each way, which we could not confirm on an official page we could load.
  • Backup: take Lakeshore West to Burlington, then GO Bus 12 to Niagara Falls Bus Terminal, across from the GO station.
  • Fares: the GO+WEGO combo is listed at $34 for one day on the weekday page and $22 on the weekend page, and $40 or $35 for two days. The pages disagree, so confirm at checkout. Children 12 and under ride GO free. We found no standalone Union to Niagara Falls fare.

The GO+WEGO combo is the sensible way to cover the Canadian side without a car, because WEGO connects the main Niagara Parks stops. The GO Transit Niagara page has the current information.

Amtrak Maple Leaf

The Maple Leaf runs jointly with VIA and serves Toronto and Niagara Falls, New York (825 Depot Avenue West, Niagara Falls, NY 14305). Border inspection takes place at the Niagara Falls NY station. The Amtrak station is under 5 miles from Niagara Falls State Park. The whole Toronto to New York run is about 12.5 to 13 hours. An unofficial timetable showed a Toronto departure at 8:20 am, a Niagara Falls Ontario stop at about 10:22 am and a departure from the US station at about 11:40 am. Train numbers 63 and 64 conflicted between sources, so check Amtrak.com. We did not verify the journey time from New York Penn Station to Niagara Falls NY, nor any standalone VIA Toronto to Niagara Falls schedule.

Intercity buses

All bus information here comes from aggregator data, not operator pages, so confirm it before you travel.

  • Megabus Canada: Toronto Union to Niagara Falls about every 4 hours, about 1 h 35 m, with fares from $7 to $55 (aggregator).
  • FlixBus: runs Toronto and seasonal Niagara-on-the-Lake service with a stop at Rapidsview Park in Niagara Falls. According to Niagara Now, it is scheduled to run through November 2, 2026, six days a week excluding Wednesdays, with two trips a day.
  • Greyhound: no Niagara Falls Ontario service found.
  • Buffalo airport to Niagara Falls NY: FlixBus takes about 50 minutes per an aggregator.

Confirm at ca.megabus.com and flixbus.com.

Buffalo Niagara airport

Buffalo Niagara International (BUF) is about 25 miles from downtown Niagara Falls, New York. Options to the US side include rideshare, taxi, shuttle, FlixBus and NFTA Metro. We did not verify fares or timetables for the shuttle or Metro. To reach the Canadian side from Buffalo you cross the border: the computed drive from BUF to the Horseshoe Falls is 40 km and about 41 minutes before the border wait. Toronto Pearson is 124 km away, about the same distance as Toronto Union.

Getting around once you arrive

WEGO is Niagara Parks' hop-on, hop-off bus linking attractions, hotels and tourist areas, with lines meeting at Table Rock Centre. Adult passes cost CAD $16 for 24 hours and $20 for 48 hours, and child (3 to 12) passes cost $12 and $16, taxes included; children 2 and under are free. The Falls Pass presale page shows $17 for a 48-hour adult pass, which conflicts with the WEGO page. WEGO runs year-round with spring-summer and fall-winter schedules. Line names vary across sources (Blue, Green, Orange, Red versus numbers 602, 603, 604), and we could not confirm which stop is nearest the boat dock. Strollers must be folded.

The Falls Incline Railway connects Fallsview and Table Rock Centre for $4 one way, $8 round trip and $10 all day (2 and under free). It does not go to the Niagara City Cruises dock. The operator's own funicular does link Clifton Hill to the dock, but we could not confirm it is running. The Niagara City Cruises dock area is under 1 km from Rainbow Bridge.

On the American side, the Maid of the Mist FAQ suggests parking at Goat Island lots 2 or 3 and walking, or using the Niagara Scenic Trolley, to reach the Observation Deck. We could not verify trolley fares or hours. Niagara Falls Transit (the city bus) and airport shuttles were not verified for this guide.

Parking in short

Maid of the Mist points to Niagara Falls State Park Lot 1 (333 Prospect St), at $10 daily from October 12, 2026. On the Canadian side, Niagara Parks lots include Rapidsview Lot C at $10 a day with WEGO and Rainbow Bridge Lot at $12 an hour. Niagara City Cruises has no lot of its own. Prices, rules and the fill-time caveats are on the parking guide.

"Not verified" means our sources contain no confirmed public transport for that origin, not that none exists. For origins beyond 4 hours, an overnight stay lets you ride a boat in the morning, when queues are shorter.

From Toronto without a car

If you do not want to drive, take GO or a bus, as described above, or use a shared coach tour. We also offer a shared day tour from downtown Toronto (our Toronto day tour). Pickup is at 8:30 am, and we confirm the pickup point when you book. Drop-off is about 5:30 pm traffic permitting, and the group is 10 to 30 passengers. The adult price is CAD $89.99 (child and senior $79.99), and the boat ride is an optional paid add-on, from CAD $47.95 for an adult. Time at the falls is about 2.5 hours on the schedule. It is a fixed itinerary on a shared coach, so it suits people who want no driving or parking, and not people who want to choose their own timing. See the Toronto day tour page for the itinerary, or ask a question through the contact form.

We cannot give you a single cheapest answer, because the train fare without WEGO, fuel costs and parking vary and several of these prices are unverified. A group of three or more usually shares one parking fee and one toll, while each rail or bus rider pays a fare. That is arithmetic, not a sourced claim, so run your own numbers in the trip cost calculator.

Timing your trip: autumn 2026

Today is October 17, 2026, so some seasonal services are ending. Niagara Falls Passes are valid until November 1, FlixBus's seasonal Niagara-on-the-Lake service runs through November 2, and Maid of the Mist closes for the season on November 8. Niagara City Cruises has not published a 2026 closing date, and says December sailings depend on weather. WEGO runs year-round on a fall-winter schedule, but we could not read that timetable. The Falls Incline Railway closes January 19 to February 13, when WEGO covers the route. Check the season checker before you set out.

What we could not verify

  • The official GO timetable, the weekday trip count and the Union to Niagara Falls travel time (about 2 h 20 m is from a search excerpt).
  • The fare discrepancy between the two GO+WEGO pages.
  • VIA Rail, Niagara Falls Transit, airport shuttles, Greyhound; Megabus and FlixBus details are aggregator-only.
  • Amtrak train numbers and the current timetable.
  • The exact WEGO line names and the stop nearest the Niagara City Cruises dock.
  • Traffic-aware drive times, the CBP adult document list and the pedestrian-lane hours on Rainbow Bridge.

All of these facts were last checked on October 17, 2026. Schedules for 2027 are not published, so verify before you book.
