October is the month when a Niagara Falls boat tour goes from a summer activity to a closing-window one. This page treats October 2026 as a live case, because today is October 17 and everything below is a published fact about the next few weeks, not a prediction. October 2027 has not been announced by anyone, and we say so at the end.
Which boats run in October 2026
Maid of the Mist (US side) posted its 2026 schedule as daily 9 am to 5 pm from Sep 28 to Oct 31, then daily 9 am to 4 pm from Nov 1 to Nov 8, when the 141st season ends. From today, Saturday Oct 17, that is 23 operating days including today. Departures are scheduled every 15 minutes. The ticket office opens 30 minutes before the first departure and closes 15 minutes before the last. The operator says its schedule may change without notice. The 2026 published fare is US$30.25 for adults and US$19.75 for children 6 to 12, with children 5 and under free (checked October 17, 2026).
Niagara City Cruises (Canadian side) opened on May 1, 2026 after Lake Erie ice delayed the start. It has published no closing date and no October hours. The ticket page says "December sailings depend on weather" and that sailings run only when conditions are safe, and Niagara Parks lists the season as April to November. The published fare starts at CA$47.95 plus 13% HST (checked October 17, 2026). Because October hours are not published, call or check the booking calendar for your date.
Two hard limits from the September-to-November Maid of the Mist schedule are worth knowing. The hours drop from 5 pm on weekdays and 6 pm on weekends (Sep 8 to 27) to 5 pm every day from Sep 28. And on Nov 1 they drop again to 4 pm, which is before the Nov 1 falls lights-on time (4:30 pm). Our full table is on the best-time guide.
Daylight and the lights in October
Sunset times below are for the falls. The Oct 15 value is computed (NOAA algorithm, about plus or minus three minutes); the Oct 1 and Oct 31 values and an Oct 15 cross-check come from sunrise-sunset.org.
| Date, 2026 | Sunrise | Sunset | Falls lights on | Source of sun times |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oct 1 | 7:14 am | 6:57 pm | 6:15 pm | sunrise-sunset.org |
| Oct 15 | 7:28 am (7:30 reference) | 6:35 pm (6:33 reference) | 6:15 pm | Computed; reference site agrees within 2 minutes |
| Oct 16 | n/a | n/a | 6:00 pm | Lights-on changes on Oct 16 |
| Oct 31 | 7:50 am | 6:09 pm | 6:00 pm | sunrise-sunset.org |
Notice that the published lights-on times sit before sunset on these dates (by about 20 minutes on Oct 15 and about 40 minutes on Oct 1, against computed sunsets). Niagara Parks says the lights come on "every evening beginning at dusk", so treat the listed time as the schedule and check on the day. Civil dusk on Oct 15 is computed at 7:04 pm. Whichever clock you trust, Maid of the Mist's 5 pm closing means the US boats finish well before dark, and evening boats are a Canadian-side matter, and October evening sailings are not published. See the night guide.
The sun is low all day. At about 38 degrees at noon on Oct 15 (our calculation), the sun is below the roughly 42 degrees needed for a primary rainbow, so on a sunny day a rainbow in the mist is geometrically possible at any time. That does not mean you will see one: it needs sun, which October does not always supply.
October weather
| Measure | October normal | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Average daily high | 15.1 °C (59 °F) | ECCC 1981-2010, Niagara Falls NPCSH |
| Average daily low | 6.3 °C (43 °F) | same |
| Days with precipitation (0.2 mm or more) | 13.0 | same |
| Rain | 79.7 mm | same |
| Snow | 0 cm (November averages 9.8 cm) | same |
| Thunderstorm days | 0.2 | same |
About 13 days out of 31 have some precipitation in a typical October, so plan for at least one wet day in a week. These are 1981-2010 normals; ECCC's 1991-2020 set was not reachable, and the 1991-2020 temperature means published elsewhere are within about 1 °C. We found no figure for how much colder it is on the water than at the weather station, so we do not give one. Assume a cool, damp deck, which is an assumption rather than a measurement; see what to wear.
Fireworks and the Falls Pass have ended
The Niagara Parks nightly fireworks ran at 10 pm from May 15 to Oct 12, 2026 and are over for the year. The 2027 schedule is unpublished. The Niagara Falls Pass was valid April 20 to Nov 1, 2026, so it lapses in two weeks. The Winter Festival of Lights (2025-26 ran Nov 15 to Jan 4) has no 2026-27 dates announced; one site estimates Nov 14, 2026 to Jan 3, 2027, labelled as an estimate.
Autumn colour
We have no sourced statement about when leaf colour peaks at the falls or along the Niagara Parkway, so this page makes no prediction. What is sourced is a display inside: the Floral Showhouse's annual Fall Show runs Sept 12 to Oct 18, 2026, and its Whimsical Creatures displays are illuminated for the Winter Festival of Lights in November. The showhouse costs CA$8.50 for adults and CA$5.50 for children 3 to 12.
What is open after the boats stop
When Maid of the Mist closes on Nov 8, and if Niagara City Cruises also stops, the Canadian side keeps most of its attractions. All of these are sourced from Niagara Parks and the attractions' own pages; hours were not readable, so check before you go.
| Attraction | Season | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Journey Behind the Falls | Year-round | About 60 minutes; adult CA$33, child CA$21.50. Redevelopment work is planned for 2027 and 2028, and it stays open. |
| Niagara Parks Power Station + Tunnel | Year-round | About 2 hours; adult CA$33, child CA$21.50 |
| Niagara Takes Flight | Year-round | About 35 minutes; minimum height 100 cm |
| Butterfly Conservatory, Floral Showhouse | Year-round | Indoor |
| Skylon Tower, Niagara SkyWheel | Year-round | Skylon adult CA$18, SkyWheel adult CA$15 plus HST |
| Falls Incline Railway, WEGO | Year-round | The incline closes Jan 19 to Feb 13; WEGO runs seasonal timetables |
| White Water Walk, Whirlpool Aero Car | April to November | Closing dates were not found; both are seasonal |
Prices are CAD before tax, 2026 published fares as of October 17, 2026. The Journey Behind the Falls guide covers the walk-through. For the water flow, the 1950 treaty keeps at least 100,000 cubic feet a second over the falls in daytime from Sep 16 to Oct 31 (8 am to 8 pm Eastern Standard Time), and at least 50,000 cfs at other times; from Nov 1 that lower night level applies all day (see the winter guide).
A sensible October plan
- Pick a day with a sunny forecast, arrive for the 9 am opening and ride early; the boats close at 5 pm and later in the day is not an option.
- Check Niagara City Cruises' booking calendar for the actual date; do not assume October hours.
- Have an indoor attraction in mind for a wet day, such as the Butterfly Conservatory or the Power Station.
- If you want the lit falls, go on the Canadian side after 6 pm; the free view from Queen Victoria Park does not need a ticket.
- If you are coming from Toronto, our Toronto day tour runs all year, and the boat add-on is seasonal.
October 2027
Nobody has published it. Maid of the Mist's 2027 dates, Niagara City Cruises' closing date and October 2027 hours are all unannounced as of October 17, 2026. The 2026 pattern is a guide to the shape of a season, not a forecast: the Canadian opening was pushed to May 1 this year by ice, and Maid of the Mist opened on May 1 in 2025 and on Apr 24 in 2026, according to its press releases. Check the operators' sites in early 2027.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Maid of the Mist open in October 2026?
Yes. It runs daily 9 am to 5 pm from Sep 28 to Oct 31, then 9 am to 4 pm from Nov 1 to its final day on Sunday Nov 8, 2026. Departures are scheduled every 15 minutes, and the operator says schedules may change without notice.
Are the Niagara City Cruises boats running in October?
Niagara City Cruises opened on May 1, 2026 and has published no closing date or October hours. Its ticket page says December sailings depend on weather. Check the booking calendar for your date instead of assuming the summer pattern. The operator also says cruises run only when conditions are considered safe.
Are the fireworks on in October?
Not in 2026. Niagara Parks' nightly fireworks ran at 10 pm from May 15 to Oct 12, 2026 and are over for the year. The falls illumination continues nightly: lights on at 6:15 pm to Oct 15 and 6 pm from Oct 16, off at 2 am.
How cold is Niagara Falls in October?
The 1981-2010 average daily high is 15.1 °C and the low 6.3 °C, with precipitation on about 13 days of the month. We have no measured temperature for the boat deck, so layers and a waterproof layer are the safe assumption.
What time is sunset in October?
On Oct 15 sunset is about 6:35 pm (computed; a reference site gives 6:33 pm). Oct 1 is 6:57 pm and Oct 31 is 6:09 pm per sunrise-sunset.org. Maid of the Mist's last day-time closing is 5 pm, so the US boats finish before sunset.
Can I see autumn colours from the boat?
We found no sourced information on leaf-colour timing at the falls, so we make no promise. The Floral Showhouse Fall Show, which runs Sept 12 to Oct 18, 2026, is a sourced indoor option. We found nothing sourced on peak colour dates or on views from the water, so check a local conditions report closer to your visit.
What can I do after the boats close for the year?
On the Canadian side, Journey Behind the Falls, the Niagara Parks Power Station, Niagara Takes Flight, Skylon, the SkyWheel, the Butterfly Conservatory, the Floral Showhouse, WEGO and the Falls Incline stay open into winter. White Water Walk and the Whirlpool Aero Car are seasonal.
When do the 2027 boat seasons start?
Neither operator has published 2027 dates as of October 17, 2026. Maid of the Mist's spring opening depends on Lake Erie ice, and Niagara City Cruises' 2026 start slipped to May 1 for the same reason. Plan on checking both operators' sites in early 2027, and do not book non-refundable travel around an unannounced date.
