An evening at the falls has three separate parts that people tend to merge: the boats, the lights and the fireworks. They have different owners and different schedules. The boats belong to the operators, the illumination and the fireworks belong to Niagara Parks, and the evening boat product is on the Canadian side only. This guide separates them, uses only published times, and ends with a list of what no source confirms. For the wider timing picture see the best-time guide.
The Falls Fireworks Cruise
The official ticket page for Niagara City Cruises describes the Falls Fireworks Cruise as follows. It is a light-mist cruise at the base of the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls, about 40 minutes long, with views of the illuminated Horseshoe Falls and the fireworks, weather permitting. It runs on "select evenings" from spring through fall. A recyclable poncho is included. The fare starts at CA$47.95 for adults plus 13% HST; Niagara Falls Tourism lists the fireworks cruise child fare as CA$32.95 for ages 0 to 12 (the attribution to Niagara Parks is unclear in our notes), which does not match the 3-to-12 child band and the free infant rate on the daytime tour (an unresolved conflict; confirm at booking). Smoking, cannabis and vaping are not allowed.
The page is firm on two operating rules. Lower Landing gates close 20 minutes before departure, and late arrivals are not admitted and are not refunded. And the operator says it is not affiliated with the fireworks, cannot guarantee the show, its timing or its length, and is not liable if it is cancelled. Together those rules mean the cruise is a boat ride that may or may not coincide with fireworks. For the refund side of that, see the cancellation guide. Niagara City Cruises payments are generally non-refundable unless Ticket Assurance was bought, and Ticket Assurance is not offered on holiday, specialty or partnership cruises.

The after-sunset rule: where the boat goes in the dark
The Voyage to the Falls ticket page says that before sunset the boats enter the heart of the Horseshoe Falls (full mist), and that after sunset they go only to the outer edge of the Horseshoe Falls (light mist) "due to regulations". It adds that evening sailings show the illuminated falls. One blogger's older account of a late fireworks cruise says the boat did not enter the Horseshoe mist, which matches the operator's rule. The Fireworks Cruise page's own description (base of the American and Bridal Veil Falls, light mist) is the same idea.
Put plainly: a night cruise is a different experience from the daytime one. You see the lit falls from further out, with less spray. If your goal is the soaked-in-the-basin experience, ride in daylight. If your goal is the lit falls or the fireworks, accept the outer edge. The operator does not publish what "the regulations" are, and we do not speculate.
How early does "after sunset" start? That depends on the month, and so does the daytime window for the full mist. The table gives sunset on the 15th of each month against the fixed 10 pm fireworks time.
| Date (2026) | Sunset (computed) | Falls lights on | Fireworks | Sunset to fireworks | Maid of the Mist posted closing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| May 15 (Fri) | 8:31 pm | 8:30 pm | 10 pm | 1 h 29 min | 5 pm |
| Jun 15 (Mon) | 8:56 pm | 8:30 pm | 10 pm | 1 h 04 min | 6 pm weekdays / 8 pm weekends |
| Jul 15 (Wed) | 8:54 pm | 8:30 pm | 10 pm | 1 h 06 min | 8 pm |
| Aug 15 (Sat) | 8:21 pm | 8 pm | 10 pm | 1 h 39 min | 7:30 pm |
| Sep 15 (Tue) | 7:28 pm | 7 pm | 10 pm | 2 h 32 min | 5 pm weekdays / 6 pm weekends |
| Oct 15 (Thu) | 6:35 pm | 6:15 pm | 10 pm | 3 h 25 min (Oct 12 was the last show) | 5 pm |
Sunset times are computed (about plus or minus three minutes). The gap shows why summer evenings need patience. In June and July the fireworks begin about an hour after sunset; in September, about two and a half hours after. By October the nightly show was about three and a half hours after sunset, which is one reason the 10 pm slot may feel late to families. These are arithmetic differences between published times, not guarantees about what the boat does.
The Niagara Parks fireworks
- 2026 dates: nightly from Friday May 15 to Monday Oct 12, 2026 at 10 pm. The 2026 series is finished. The 2027 schedule is unpublished.
- Length: about 5 minutes for a standard show and 9 minutes for the extended shows on July 1 and July 4, per a Niagara Parks launch release (seen in a search summary).
- Cost: free to view anywhere in the park. Weather permitting.
- Best view: the Queen Victoria Park lawn and parapet wall, says Niagara Parks. Other listed spots are the water's edge at Journey Behind the Falls, the Queen Victoria Place Restaurant terrace and Power Station at Night.
- Parking: Queen Victoria Place is the closest lot (limited) and Falls Parking (Lot A, 6635 Niagara Parkway) is the main lot. Rates were not readable.
- Cancellations: Niagara Parks publishes a cancellation phone line on the fireworks page; check it on the evening.
The Winter Festival of Lights has separate fireworks (Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm in the 2025-26 edition, and nightly from Dec 26 to Jan 4). See the winter guide. In 2026, a nightly fireworks series in October ended on Oct 12, so a late-season visitor can see the lights but not the nightly show.
What a boat passenger sees of the fireworks is the unverified part. The operator promises "views of ... fireworks, weather permitting" but publishes neither the departure time relative to the 10 pm show nor where on the water the boat sits during it. A 40-minute cruise could cover the show if it left around 9:20 pm, but no source says that it does. If you buy the cruise for the fireworks, confirm the departure time against the show time on your date.
The nightly illumination schedule
The falls are lit every evening beginning at dusk, all year. The listed lights-on times for 2026 are below. Lights go off at 1:00 am in January and February to Mar 11, and 2:00 am the rest of the year. Niagara Parks also publishes a calendar of special colour illuminations on the same page.
| Dates | Lights on |
|---|---|
| Jan 1-31 | 5 pm |
| Feb 1 - Mar 11 | 5:30 pm |
| Mar 12-31 | 7:30 pm |
| Apr 1 - May 14 | 8 pm |
| May 15 - Jul 31 | 8:30 pm |
| Aug 1-15 | 8 pm |
| Aug 16-31 | 7:30 pm |
| Sep 1-19 | 7 pm |
| Sep 20-30 | 6:30 pm |
| Oct 1-15 | 6:15 pm |
| Oct 16-31 | 6 pm |
| Nov 1 - Dec 31 | 4:30 pm |
The times drop from 8:30 pm in summer to 4:30 pm for Nov 1 to Dec 31 because the daylight does. A reminder on the October rows: they sit before sunset (6:15 pm and 6:00 pm against a computed 6:35 pm on Oct 15, and 6:57 pm on Oct 1), so check the listing for the exact evening.

Why Maid of the Mist and the lit falls barely overlap
People ask for a "night Maid of the Mist". It does not exist in the 2026 schedule. The latest posted closing time in 2026 is 8 pm, in effect from the Memorial Day weekend on weekends and daily from Jun 22 to Aug 9, and every period's closing is before sunset. Against the falls' lights-on times, the posted closing is earlier than or equal to lights-on in every period but one (equal on Aug 1 to 9 and Aug 16 to 30). The exception is Labor Day weekend (Sep 4 to 7), when the boats are posted to 7:15 pm and the lights come on at 7 pm. The ticket office stops selling 15 minutes before the last departure, and the last departure time is not published, so even there the overlap is not proven. The daylight chart in our timing guide shows the same pattern.
Also note that the illumination and fireworks are Niagara Parks events on the Canadian side. We did not find a source on how well they can be seen from the New York side, and we do not claim it. See our Maid of the Mist guide for the US-side hours.
Other things to do at night
If the evening matters more than the water, there are sourced alternatives on the Canadian side:
| Option | What the sources say |
|---|---|
| Journey Behind the Falls at Night | Offered during the nightly illumination. A separate night price was not found; the daytime fare is CA$33.00 adult and CA$21.50 child, about 60 minutes. See the guide. |
| Niagara Parks Power Station at Night | A separate evening experience (the Currents show). Details and times were not read. |
| Skylon Tower | Ride to the top CA$18 adult / CA$9 child; Day and Night pass CA$22 / CA$11 for two rides within 24 hours. Online prices are discounted. |
| Niagara SkyWheel | CA$15 adult / CA$7 child plus HST. Sun to Thu 10 am to midnight, Fri and Sat 10 am to 2 am. |
| Queen Victoria Park | Free viewing of the illumination and the fireworks, per Niagara Parks. |
Photography basics, only where sourced
Night photography settings are outside what our sources cover, so this page gives none. What is supported:
- Cameras are allowed on Niagara City Cruises. Professional photo or video equipment needs authorization from the operator's marketing team. Tripod and selfie-stick rules were not found.
- Use a waterproof pouch and a wrist strap, and skip a tripod (a single blog source; not an operator rule).
- The close-in part of a ride is brief, so expect to shoot fast (visitor accounts).
- For the fireworks, Niagara Parks calls the Queen Victoria Park lawn and parapet wall the best view.
More on viewing and light is in the photography guide.
Daytime Voyage or evening cruise?
| Daytime Voyage to the Falls | Falls Fireworks Cruise | |
|---|---|---|
| Length | About 20 minutes | About 40 minutes |
| Route | Gorge, American Falls, Bridal Veil, then the Horseshoe Falls | Base of the American and Bridal Veil Falls |
| Mist | Full mist in the heart of the Horseshoe before sunset; light mist at the outer edge after | Light mist |
| Poncho | Included | Included |
| Starting fare | From CA$47.95 plus HST | From CA$47.95 plus HST |
| Schedule | Every 30 minutes, 9:30 am to 6:30 pm from May 1; extended hours from May 15 unpublished | Select evenings, spring through fall; dates not on the pages we read |
| Guarantees | Runs when conditions are safe | None on the fireworks: no guarantee of the show, its timing or its length |
The fare is the same starting price and the cruise is twice as long, so the per-minute cost is lower for the evening cruise, but you give up the close-in basin view. That is arithmetic on published numbers; whether the longer, lighter ride is better is a personal judgement. If you want both, the daytime Voyage and an evening Falls Fireworks Cruise are separate tickets. Our operator comparison sets the two operators side by side.
Getting there and back after dark
Niagara City Cruises has no lot of its own. Its directions name the SkyWheel lot (4960 Clifton Hill) and the Fallsview lot (6650 Niagara Parkway), paid flat daily fees with more than 700 spaces, no overnight and no in-and-out. Niagara Parks says no overnight parking is allowed at its lots. WEGO runs year-round on seasonal timetables, but we could not read the 2026 fall-winter schedule, so check the last bus before you plan a late night without a car. A late evening also affects any border crossing: the Rainbow Bridge is listed as open 24 hours, but on the evening of Oct 17, 2026 the border feed showed pedestrian lanes closed, so confirm before walking back to the US side. Our border guide and getting-there guide cover documents and transport.
What we could not verify
- Which evenings the Falls Fireworks Cruise runs, and whether it sails after Oct 12 or in 2027.
- Its departure times relative to the 10 pm Parks show, and whether passengers see the fireworks from the water.
- The regulations behind the outer-edge rule after sunset.
- Evening hours for the standard Voyage to the Falls: the operator says departures run "throughout the day and evening", and extended hours from May 15 are unpublished.
- The child price and age band for the fireworks cruise.
- How the lights and fireworks look from the US side.
Planning an evening
| If you want... | Do this |
|---|---|
| Free fireworks, no boat | Arrive at Queen Victoria Park early for a spot on the parapet wall; the show is at 10 pm in season (not in 2026 after Oct 12). |
| The lit falls from the water | Book the Falls Fireworks Cruise for an evening that is on sale, confirm the departure time and arrive 20 minutes before it. |
| Full mist and a soaking | Ride in the daytime. After sunset the boat stays at the outer edge. |
| US side by day, Canadian side by night | Ride Maid of the Mist, then cross Rainbow Bridge. Check documents and the border guide before you go. |
| A day from Toronto that ends at night | Our Toronto day tour (details) is listed as returning to Toronto at about 5:30 pm, traffic permitting, so it does not cover the lights; ask about a private tour through the contact form. |
Frequently asked questions
Is there a Niagara Falls fireworks cruise?
Yes. Niagara City Cruises sells a Falls Fireworks Cruise, about 40 minutes, on select evenings from spring through fall. It promises views of the lit Horseshoe Falls and the fireworks, weather permitting. The pages we could read do not list which evenings it runs.
What time are the Niagara Falls fireworks?
In 2026 the Niagara Parks fireworks ran nightly at 10 pm from May 15 to Oct 12, weather permitting, about 5 minutes long. Extended shows ran July 1 and 4. The 2026 series has ended and the 2027 schedule is not published.
Do the boats get close to the falls at night?
Not as close. Niagara City Cruises says that after sunset boats go only to the outer edge of the Horseshoe Falls, in light mist, due to regulations. Before sunset they enter the heart of the Horseshoe Falls in full mist.
Does Maid of the Mist run at night?
No. Its 2026 hours end by 8 pm at the latest and by 5 pm from Sep 28, always before sunset. The posted closing is not the last departure, which is unpublished. The one overlap with the lights is Labor Day weekend, when closing is 7:15 pm and the lights come on at 7 pm.
Can I see the fireworks from the boat?
The operator advertises views of the fireworks, weather permitting, but does not say where the boat sits or what time it leaves relative to the 10 pm show, and it says it cannot guarantee the show. Confirm the departure time on your date.
What time do the falls lights come on?
It depends on the date. In 2026: 8:30 pm from May 15 to Jul 31, 8 pm in early August, 7 pm in early September, 6:15 pm in early October, 6 pm from Oct 16 and 4:30 pm from Nov 1. They go off at 1 or 2 am.
Is the fireworks cruise worth it?
That depends on your goal. It costs the same starting fare as the daytime tour, lasts twice as long and has less spray. If you want the lit falls from the water it fits. If you want the close-in basin or a guaranteed fireworks view, it does not, because neither is promised.
What is the best place to watch the fireworks for free?
Niagara Parks names the Queen Victoria Park lawn and parapet wall as the best view. Viewing in Niagara Parks is free. The closest parking is Queen Victoria Place (limited); the main lot is Falls Parking. Arrive early on show nights, since parking near the park is limited.
