Quick answer

How long is the Niagara Falls boat ride?

Twenty minutes on the water, but the visit is longer. What the sources say, and what they do not.

Tour boat and a rainbow below the Horseshoe Falls
Short answerThe ride itself is about 20 minutes on both Maid of the Mist and Niagara City Cruises, and about 40 minutes on the Falls Fireworks Cruise. Allow longer for the whole visit: one source says 45 to 60 minutes, another 40 to 90 minutes of queuing and boarding on top of the ride. Both are estimates.

Checked against the sources listed below on October 17, 2026. Some operator pages could not be fully read; gaps are stated in the text.

The question has two honest answers: how long the boat is on the water, and how long your whole visit takes. The first is stated by the operators. The second is not published by either, so every figure for it below is an estimate with its source named.

How long is the ride itself?

Maid of the Mist's FAQ gives the tour as 20 minutes, passing the American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and Horseshoe Falls. The state park describes the route as past the base of the American Falls and into the basin of the Horseshoe Falls. Niagara City Cruises' Voyage to the Falls page describes about 20 minutes, from the Niagara Gorge past the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls to the Horseshoe Falls. Some third-party pages say 15 to 30 minutes and one blog gives both 20 and 20 to 30; the operators' own figure is 20. The Falls Fireworks Cruise is about 40 minutes with a light-mist route to the base of the American and Bridal Veil Falls (see the night guide). One visitor comparison says about 10 minutes of a daytime ride is the close part near the Horseshoe Falls; that is a single account, not an operator figure.

How long is the whole visit?

A visit includes buying or exchanging a ticket, queuing, boarding, the ride, unloading and the way back up. The sources:

Add time for the dock access. On the US side boarding begins at the Observation Tower: ticket booths at street level, then an elevator to the landing at the base of the gorge, which is included in the ticket. On the Canadian side the Lower Landing is reached by ramp and elevators. Also add parking time: see our parking guide. Boarding on Maid of the Mist is first come, first served, even with an online ticket, so there is no slot to arrive inside.

First boat and last boat by month

Maid of the Mist opens at 9 am in every period (the operator publishes the opening hour, not a first-departure time); Niagara City Cruises' published first sailing is 9:30 am. The Maid of the Mist posts closing times, not last-departure times; the ticket office closes 15 minutes before the last departure, so the closing time is an upper bound for the last boat. For the Canadian side, "9:30 am to 6:30 pm" is the published pattern from May 1; extended hours from May 15 are not published.

For the full hour-by-hour table and the sunset comparison see the best-time guide. For observed queue lengths see the wait-times page. If you are doing the boat alongside other attractions, remember that Journey Behind the Falls is about 60 minutes and the Power Station about two hours. The itineraries page has sample days.

What is not published: the operators' own total-visit times, observed queue lengths by hour, and the Maid of the Mist's last-departure times. Maid of the Mist says its website has a Wait Times Trends and Insights feature, new for 2026, which we could not read.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the Maid of the Mist ride?

The operator's FAQ says the tour lasts 20 minutes, passing the American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and Horseshoe Falls. Boats depart every 15 minutes through the day. That is the time on the water, not the whole visit with queuing.

How long is the Niagara City Cruises Voyage to the Falls?

The ticket page describes about 20 minutes, from the Niagara Gorge past the American and Bridal Veil Falls to the Horseshoe Falls. Sailings leave every 30 minutes, and the operator warns that in peak season a departure may not occur within your timed slot.

How long is the fireworks cruise?

About 40 minutes, according to Niagara City Cruises. The Lower Landing gates close 20 minutes before departure, and late arrivals are not admitted or refunded. The cruise dates are not published on the pages we read. The operator describes the fireworks cruise as a light-mist route at the base of the American and Bridal Veil Falls.

How long should I allow for the whole boat tour?

One third-party page says 45 to 60 minutes in total. Another puts queuing and boarding at 40 to 90 minutes on top of the 20-minute ride. Both are estimates. Allow more on holiday weekends and summer afternoons. Quiet mornings sit at the low end; peak summer afternoons and holiday weekends at the high end.

What are the busiest hours for lines?

Niagara City Cruises names mid-June to Labour Day, holiday weekends, 11 am to 6 pm as peak lineups. Third-party guides say early morning is quietest. No operator publishes measured queue times; see our wait-times page. Maid of the Mist says its website has a Wait Times Trends and Insights feature, which we could not read.

What time is the first and last boat?

Maid of the Mist opens at 9 am (no separate first-departure time is published); its 2026 closing time ranges from 4 pm to 8 pm depending on the date. Niagara City Cruises' published pattern is 9:30 am to 6:30 pm from May 1. The last-departure time is not published for either.

Does a longer ticket line mean a longer ride?

No. The ride is the same 20 minutes whatever the queue, per the operators. Only waiting and boarding grow in busy periods. Online Maid of the Mist tickets are first come, first served, so they do not reserve a time.
